The GMT800 based Suburbans were introduced in late December 1999 in Texas only and January 2000 nationally for the 2000 model year. For 2000 Chevrolet's long serving 5.7 liter and 7.4 liter V8 engines were retired along with the 6.5 liter diesel, except in Mexico until 2002. GMC's equivalent to the Chevrolet model, originally also named Suburban, was rebranded Yukon XL for the 2000 model year. Production of the ninth generation began at Janesville Assembly and Silao Assembly.
