The GMT800 Silverado and Sierra 1500 and 2500 pickup trucks were released in August 1998 as 1999 models, and the Silverado name, taken from the top trim level of the Chevrolet C/K series, became the name of the whole line. The classic GMT400 C/K trucks continued to be produced for the first two years alongside the new models. GMC had ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation before Chevrolet, so the Sierra was the twin of the Silverado.
