For 1982 the Malibu was facelifted with more squared off front styling marked by quad headlights with long, thin turn signals beneath them. The 1982 car was one of the last two years of the rear wheel drive Malibu of the fourth generation, which was soon to be replaced in the Chevrolet range by front wheel drive models, and it kept the mid size body that had been downsized in 1978. The Malibu also served as a mid size police car, since the 9C1 package had moved to it after the Nova ended in 1979.
