For 1999 the 3.1 liter V6 was retuned, increasing output to 170 horsepower, and the Wilmington Assembly plant stopped building the N body Malibu that year, leaving production at Oklahoma City. From 1997 to 1999 the Malibu was styled with a five bar grille that had a Chevrolet badge centered inside an ocean wave styled badge, which was retained on the trunklid. The retuned 3.1 liter V6 gave more power than the engine of 1997 and 1998.
