The 1978 Impala continued the downsized body introduced in 1977, with its double bent tempered rear window on the coupes. Production of the downsized model had increased substantially over 1976, and the Impala regained the number one position in United States sales, as the Impala and upscale Caprice sold well into the early 1980s. The 1977 to 1979 coupes had a double bent tempered rear window, similar to the one later used on the 1987 Monte Carlo Aerocoupe.
