The Impala was downsized for 1977, going on sale in late September 1976 with the other downsized B body sedans, and the redesigned Impala and Caprice was named Motor Trend's car of the year. The inline six was reintroduced with 110 horsepower, 267 and 305 cubic inch V8s were options, and the pillarless hardtops were dropped because of rumors of federal rollover standards. The new Impala's frame was a shortened version of the one introduced in 1970 and would be used until 1996, when the B body production line was shut down.
