The 1996 model year was the last of the Impala SS, with 41,941 units sold, and production ran late into the model year to a ceremony at the Arlington plant on December 13, 1996 when the last one was built. The 1996 car was also exported to the Middle East as the Caprice SS, with only the rear quarter panel fonts and the dashboard badge changed. The whole B body line, which had the Caprice, the Impala SS, the Buick Roadmaster and the related D body Fleetwood, was discontinued so that General Motors could use the assembly lines for more profitable SUVs.
