For its 1958 debut the Impala had symmetrical triple taillights, and it was the first Chevrolet model year with dual headlamps; deeply sculptured rear fenders replaced the tailfins of 1957. It was sold as a top Bel Air two door hardtop and convertible, was one of the models that marked General Motors' fiftieth year, and helped Chevrolet regain the number one production spot in a recession year. In total 55,989 Impala convertibles and 125,480 coupes were built, which was 15 percent of Chevrolet production.
