In 1974 the rear bumper was redesigned with shock absorbers to meet the upgraded standards and new taillights were added. It was the only year of 1971 to 1976 in which the Impala had a front end different from the Caprice Classic. The Custom Coupe was no longer a hardtop, and a limited edition Spirit of America package was offered on Sport Coupes. In an unusual styling move the optional Impala wheel covers for 1974 were the same as the 1970 Impalas, and the Sport Coupe, still a pillarless hardtop, used larger roll down quarter glass with a narrower fastback style flat back window.
