For 1986 the Z24 package was added as an option for the coupe and hatchback models, which carried the 2.8 liter V6 engine that had been added as an option in 1985. The Cavalier was the fifth year of the first generation, a front wheel drive compact in the General Motors J platform family, and a sporty alternative to the base Cavalier. The 2.8 liter V6 of the Z24 gave the Cavalier of 1986 its sporty edge, and the coupe and hatchback were the body styles that took the package.
