The production of the Caprice was stopped in December 1996, with the last built on December 13, because of sales pressure from the mid size Chevrolet Lumina, financial troubles at General Motors and consumer demand shifting from full size family sedans to sport utility vehicles. The Arlington, Texas plant that built the Caprice, Impala SS, Buick Roadmaster and Cadillac Fleetwood was converted to full size SUVs. In 1997 the Lumina LTZ took the Caprice's place.
