The third generation Camaro went on sale in December 1981 after production began on October 12, 1981. The 1982 model had the first hatchback body, and options such as factory fuel injection and a four cylinder engine. The Z28 was Motor Trend's Car of the Year for 1982, paced the Indianapolis 500, and a European version, the Z28-E, was shown at Geneva. About 173,000 were sold in the United States. The third generation, like the first two, shared its F body platform with the Pontiac Firebird.
