In November 1971 a showroom stock 1971 Coupe de Ville placed third in the annual coast to coast Cannonball Run, posting the highest average speed of the event, 84.6 miles per hour excluding stops. As with all General Motors full size lines, the De Ville was completely redesigned for 1971, and the Sedan de Ville continued as a true hardtop, a body style that would remain until the 1977 model. The 1971 Coupe de Ville averaged 8.9 miles per gallon in the Cannonball Run.
