Cadillac began marketing the Catera in the United States in the fall of 1996 as a 1997 model with a base price of 29,995 dollars. In 1996 an early production model was shown at the Detroit, Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto auto shows. The Catera was a rebadged Opel Omega B manufactured by Opel in Rüsselsheim, Germany, so it was the first modern Cadillac built in Europe. The 1997 Catera was the first model year of the German built Cadillac, a rear drive car shown in North America in 1996.
