Z1 production started in March 1989, after BMW had announced in August 1987 that the car would be built and had unveiled the production form at that September's Frankfurt Motor Show. The car was assembled by hand at BMW's plant in Munich. With its retractable doors, which dropped down into the body sills so that the car could be driven with them open, the Z1 attracted wide attention among those interested in new sports cars.
