The Z1 finished production in June 1991, at the end of a run of just over two years, with exactly 8,000 cars produced. BMW ended the production because demand had dropped significantly after the initial rush of orders. The car's successor in the Z series, the mass produced Z3, began production in 1995 and took the roadster to a much wider market. The 8,000 cars built by the end of production make it a rare modern collectable of its era, though the order book had been far larger.
