1990 was the peak year for the Z1: more than half of all Z1 cars, 4,091 of them, were built for the 1990 model year. Production at the Munich plant ran at a steady pace through the year, though BMW later noted that demand had fallen significantly in comparison with the order book of 35,000 that it had claimed in 1988. The distinctive doors were the main reason people recognised the car. Most of the production went to markets in Europe, where the car was hand finished in small batches.
