Production of the XM started in December 2022 at the BMW US Manufacturing Company plant in Greer, South Carolina, with deliveries commencing in 2023. The XM is a full size crossover with a plug in hybrid electric drivetrain and the second car developed entirely by BMW M, after the BMW M1 in 1978. BMW had unveiled its concept version in Miami Beach on 29 November 2021 at Art Basel. The XM name had earlier been used by a Citroen executive car, so BMW made a gentlemen's agreement with the French maker to use it.
