The G01 X3 was unveiled in June 2017, designed by Calvin Luk, BMW's Australian designer. In 2017 production of the X3 began at BMW South Africa's Rosslyn plant, alongside the Spartanburg plant, after the facility underwent a major upgrade to prepare for the X3, replacing the long running 3 Series production at Rosslyn. The G01 X3 was the third generation of the compact luxury crossover. It was the first X3 designed by an Australian, and the third generation of the model.
