BMW upgraded the E83 X3 in 2005. A 2.0d diesel engine became available for some markets, joining the 2.5i and 3.0i petrol engines found in the United States and the 3.0d diesel sold elsewhere, front fenders were made in one piece, and the 2005 carpeting matched the leather chosen. The X3 3.0i won the Canadian Car of the Year Best Sports Utility Vehicle award for 2005. It was also the year of the 2.5i and 3.0i in the United States.
