Production of the M6 came to an end in 2019 and the car was replaced by the BMW M8 in the same year. It had been sold by BMW's M division from 1983 with a hiatus between 1990 and 2004, and the last generation was the third. The model years of the last generation ran from 2012 until the end of the line in 2019, when the 8 Series based car arrived. The M8 that replaced it was introduced in June 2019.
