The first BMW M5, based on the E28 5 Series, was manufactured from October 1984 to June 1988. It was hand built beginning in late 1984 on the E28 535i chassis, with a modified engine from the M1 that made it the fastest production saloon at the time, and it made its debut at the Amsterdam Motor Show in February 1985. Production of the North American specification car ran from November 1986 to November 1987. Its model years run from 1984 to 1988.
