Production of the North American specification M5 commenced in November 1986 and ended in November 1987. The 1986 car was the E28 M5, hand built on the 535i chassis, with a modified engine from the M1. A class action over the North American cars later gave owners a voucher for 4,000 dollars in 1993, and assembly took place before the 1986 factory summer vacation. The North American M5 was a version of the car for that market.
