The iX was released in June 2021 as a 2022 model, alongside the i4, with sales beginning in November 2021. At launch BMW indicated the release was part of an ongoing effort to reach a 50 percent global share of the electric vehicle market, and the iX was announced to be manufactured at the Dingolfing plant on an architecture compatible with the modular CLAR platform used by combustion cars. It was the second fully electric BMW after the i3.
