The BMW iX was officially announced in November 2020, with styling details of the production variant becoming apparent that year, after the Vision iNext concept had been unveiled at the 2018 LA Auto Show. The iNext concept had been announced by BMW in March 2016 as the new spearhead of innovation and technology, with a goal of launch early in the next decade. The production iX had a very different look from the earlier i3 and i8.
