The i3 hatchback was a single generation electric car, shown as a concept at the 2011 International Motor Show Germany and put into production in Leipzig in September 2013. It had a carbon fibre reinforced body, rear wheel drive, a single speed transmission and an underfloor lithium ion battery, with an optional range extender. It was refreshed in 2018, given the sporty i3s, and a larger 42.2 kWh battery in 2018 and 2019, and ended in July 2022. Its model years run from 2013 to 2022.
