The 2019 model year i3 had the larger 42.2 kWh battery, announced in September 2018, and was sold as the i3 and i3s, with the range extender version also available. In 2019 BMW planned to continue i3 production until 2024, and there were no specific plans for a successor to the car, which at that point had been in production since 2013. It was the sixth year of production at Leipzig. The larger battery meant the car could cover more distance on one charge than earlier versions.
