The E32 saloon was produced in 1988 as a short wheelbase 730i and 735i and as the V12 750i, the model now being on the market for two years. Design work started in late 1979 and 1:1 scale models had been shown by 1983, and the car was frozen in October 1984, three years before it arrived. It was the E23's replacement as BMW's flagship. By then the car had been in production for two years, since the 735i started in June 1986.
