The E23 was replaced by the E32 7 Series in 1986, which brought the first generation to an end after 285,029 cars. Models sold in the United States, called the L7, stayed on sale until 1987, and the last turbocharged 745i for Europe was also built in 1986. It was the first of a luxury line that BMW has developed ever since. In 1986 the new E32 took over in most markets, while the American L7 remained available until 1987, a final year for the older car.
