In its first full year the E23 was sold as the 728, 730 and 733i in the six cylinder range, in a body that BMW built until 1986 and that totalled 285,029 cars. The big saloon was seen as a technically advanced car of its time, with the first anti lock braking available on a BMW, and it took the 7 Series to a market that Mercedes and others had dominated. In 1978 the E23 was still a new and relatively expensive model, sold in several countries.
