The 7 Series was launched in 1977 as the E23, BMW's full size luxury flagship, replacing the E3 New Six sedans. It was a four door saloon with six cylinder engines, in a large and sober shape, and it started the 7 Series numbering that BMW has used since. The new car was positioned at the top of the BMW range above the E12 5 Series, which had been on sale since 1972. The E3 New Six saloons that it replaced were BMW's earlier big six cylinder cars.
