The 503 was a single generation of 2+2 grand tourers, developed alongside the 507 roadster. In early 1954, influenced by the public reaction to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL and 220 S Coupe and Cabriolet show cars in New York in February 1954, the management of BMW approved the project. From 1957 all 503s were fitted with front discs, on the recommendation of John Surtees, who had bought a 507. A Mark 2 version of September 1957 had a revised drivetrain. Its model years run from 1956 to 1959.
