From 1985 all North American E28 models had ABS brakes as standard, and the 535i replaced the 533i in the American line up. The 524td diesel was also sold in the United States for a short time, in 1985 and 1986, as BMW tested a market for its diesel. In South Africa the model continued to be built at Rosslyn as the 5 Series. It was a year in which the 5 Series was available as a diesel and a performance M5 as well as the volume petrol cars.
