E28 production ended in December 1987 after a run that began in July 1981, though the car continued to be sold in North America as a 1988 model year car after its E34 successor was released in Europe in early 1988. A limited edition model was also sold in South Africa from mid 1987 until the end of 1988. The 535is was introduced in the United States in 1987. It was the last year of production for the E28 in Europe, with the 535is the sporty version in the United States.
