By 1980 the E12 was in its final full year before the E28 took over, and BMW offered replacement cylinder heads in the United States for owners whose heads had cracked, even if their warranty had expired. This was a rare quality problem for the car, which was otherwise noted for build quality. The E24 6 Series coupe was also built on the E12 platform until 1982. The E12 was nearing the end of its nine year life, with the E28 less than a year away.
