For the 1979 model year the 528i replaced the 530i as the American market 5 Series. In South Africa the M20 engine entered local production in 1979, though the 2.0 liter M10 carried on with 518 badges there. About a thousand special edition cars were sold in 1979 and 1980. The E12 was now in its seventh year but still carried on. The 530i that it replaced had been the only 5 Series offered in the United States since the 1975 model year.
