The E12 got a facelift in 1976, with the August 1976 update giving every model the same bonnet, with a narrow raised central section running to the front and wrapping around the kidney grille. It was timed to coincide with the arrival of the E23 7 Series in September. The facelift kept the car looking fresh while the larger 7 Series took the top of BMW's range. The facelifted nose and the changes of 1976 were the main differences from the earlier E12 style.
