The 528i with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection began production in July 1978 as the replacement for the carburetted 528. British magazine Modern Motor praised the 1978 528i for its acceleration and build quality but criticised unpredictable handling and excessive body roll. The model became the main performance version of the E12 and the car that took BMW's range into the 1980s. The fuel injected 528i was a step up from the carburetted car it replaced.
