The Compact hatchback went into production in 1994 and the 318tds diesel was introduced, powered by a turbocharged and intercooled four cylinder. The Touring estate of the previous generation E30 stayed on sale until April 1994, while the E36 Touring itself was still a year away. In November 1994 the E36 wagon production began. The model was now sold as a saloon, a coupe, a convertible and a hatchback, with the Touring still to come.
