The 318iS arrived in 1989 as a two door only model with the new M42 engine, the most modern four cylinder in the E30 range, featuring double overhead cams, hydraulic valve adjusters and coil on plug ignition. For the North American market the old aluminium bumpers were finally replaced this year by shorter body coloured plastic ones. The Touring estate and the convertible were available throughout, and the four cylinder engines now ran from the 316i to the 318iS.
