The four door saloon joined the line in 1983, making the E30 the first 3 Series with four doors. In Germany the diesel M21 engine made its debut that year in the 5 Series 524td, setting up the six cylinder diesel that the 3 Series would get two years later. The car was now being built at Munich, Regensburg and in South Africa for local sale. In 1983 the Munich and Regensburg lines were building the E30 alongside the older E21, which ended in December.
