At the Frankfurt show in September 1987 BMW introduced a major update, often called Series 2, with the Touring estate, new rear lights and bumpers, and a new M40 four cylinder engine in place of the old M10. The turbocharged 324td came in with the facelift, the Touring entered production, and the 325e was dropped. A special 320is was made for Italy and Portugal, where engines over two liters were heavily taxed.
