The E30 was released at the end of November 1982, with series production beginning in October. Styled under Claus Luthe, it looked like the twin headlight E21 but had a revised suspension that tamed the oversteer of the earlier car. It was first built only as a two door saloon. The launch range used the carried over M10 four cylinder in the 316, the injected 318i, and the 320i and 323i with M20 six cylinder engines.
