The E21 reached the end of its run in 1982, the year its replacement, the E30, was introduced in the 3 Series line. The 315 economy version stayed on the price list alongside the new car, and sold on in some markets into 1984, so the older car remained available at the bottom of the range while BMW changed over production. The year was also the last in which the 318i, 320/6 and 323i led the range, since the E30 was released at the end of November.
