For the 1980 model year the four cylinder cars were upgraded. The 1.8 liter carburetted engine was revised to give 89 horsepower and went into the 316, and the fuel injected 318i replaced the carburetted 318 as the mid range model. In Sweden, where the 320/6 was never approved, this injected 1.8 liter engine was sold with a 320i badge. American cars lost their thermal reactor for a catalytic converter.
