A facelift in 1979 revised the middle of the dashboard, with rotary knobs taking the place of the slider controls for heating and ventilation and a better arrangement for air conditioning. The analog clock in the center gave way to a digital one under the instrument cluster. In August of this year the American 320i was changed for the 1980 model year to a smaller 1.8 liter engine. The 316 stayed the cheap entry model at the time, with its 1.6 liter engine.
