In 1978 BMW added the cabriolet that the range had lacked. Karosserie Baur built the TopCabriolet, which had a targa roof section that stowed in the trunk and an independent folding rear top, and it could be ordered with every engine and sold through the BMW dealer network with the BMW warranty. The 323i kept its place at the head of the line as the fuel injected six cylinder performance model. The 323i reached 100 km/h in 8.7 seconds, the quickest E21.
