The Austin based 3/15 series was discontinued before the March 1932 expiration of BMW's licence to manufacture Austin Sevens, and was replaced by the BMW 3/20. In all, 18,976 BMW 3/15s were manufactured between 1929 and 1932, after the 9,307 Dixi 3/15s of 1927 to 1929, and the car was BMW's first, an Austin 7 built under licence. The BMW 3/15 was then replaced by the BMW 3/20, BMW's own design. The licence from the Austin Motor Company had been due to expire in March 1932.
