The Clef of 1993 was in its second year, the top sedan of Autozam, with front wheel drive and a four speed automatic transmission, and the base 2.0 available with four wheel drive. The width of the car exceeded the compact car limit, so buyers in Japan were liable for an additional annual tax, and because it was largely identical to other Mazda GE platform cars, it was not usually their first choice. Of all Autozam products sold at the time, only the Clef exceeded the width dimension stipulation.
