The AZ-3 went on sale in June 1991 as a hatchback coupe that Mazda made and sold through its Autozam channel, with the Eunos Presso sold at the Eunos stores as its sister car. It was at first offered with the 1.5 liter inline four engine only. It used the E platform of Mazda and had a three dimensional curved rear window, and its look, like a small RX-7, was that of the car sold at another channel. The AZ in the name AZ-3 stood for Autozam and the 3 for the size of the car.
